「 FAQ 」
| 「 BASIC INFORMATION 」 「 What sort of game is this? 」 Yoshiwara Nights is a smut game that takes place in a fictionalized version of Yoshiwara, a red light district that was established near Tokyo during the Edo period. The game's setting is Japanese folklore flavored urban fantasy set during a rough equivalent to the early 1980s. Due to the nature of the setting there will be numerous mentions of prostitution, other types of sex work, organized crime, drug use, human trafficking, and various dark subjects in the game's information pages and events. If any of these subjects make you uncomfortable please read with caution. 「 Is there a plot? What other genres are involved? 」 There is indeed an overarching metaplot for the game. The primary genre for said metaplot is faction-driven political intrigue both mundane and supernatural. The overall course of the plot will be primarily determined by in character choices. 「 What sort of characters can we app? 」 Yoshiwara Nights accepts... • Canon characters, including fictionalized versions of historical and mythological figures, malleable protagonists, and canon AUs; in the case of canon AUs, we only allow two versions of the same character at a time • Original characters from original worlds • Fandom OCs from tabletop games and MMORPGs, though these will be approved on a case-by-case basis. Other fandom OCs, player-made AUs, and CR AUs are not permitted. All character must be from media and canon points that have been released for at least one month. Furthermore, your character must be both willing and able to engage in some form of sexual contact with other characters. Using aphro elements to facilitate this is permissible. 「 How many characters can I app? 」 You can currently play up to 2 characters at once, though you may only app 1 per app round. 「 Is there an age limit on characters? 」 • If a character's physical and mental age match, they must be at least 15 • Immortal, ageless, and artificially aged characters (e.g.: robots) characters must behave as and appear to be at least a teenager If an immortal character has no official apparent age given by canon, supplemental materials, or word of god, they'll be accepted into the game on a case-by-case basis. Contact the mods if you aren't sure if your character passes. Characters that have been de-aged to a younger-than-teenage form in canon (whether it's via magic, medicine, or some other method) will be re-aged upon arriving in the game, provided they're still mentally adults even in their younger form. However, if a character is both mentally and physically de-aged we ask that you app them from a non-de-aged canon point. 「 Is there a cast or game cap? 」 • Franchise Cap: 5 characters per canon • Game Cap: 80 players The franchise cap means even canons with disconnected installations (Disney, Final Fantasy, Persona) or multiple AUs (DC, Marvel, Star Wars) will be considered the same canon for the purposes of the cap. Eventually, we will switch to having both a higher franchise cap and a lower cast cap (for individual canons) in place at the same time. Note that the game cap is by player, meaning that current players can apply for a new character during any app round. 「 SETTING INFORMATION 」 「 What happens when my character arrives? 」 Your character will be pulled out of the Sumida river by members of one of the four major factions. The factions will provide new characters with medical care, food, clothing, and a brief explanation of where they are. In exchange for this help, all characters will be indebted to the faction that helps them for 3 months. 「 What does it mean to be indebted to a faction? 」 Basically, it's short-term indentured servitude. Your character will be given a job, food, and a place to stay, but in exchange they're expected to work exclusively for their faction for little to no pay. Factions have a vested interest in keeping talented newcomers around, however. If someone is hard-working, competent, or (best of all) both then their faction will reward them with better jobs, better housing, and better pay. Once the indebted period ends they can either stay with their current faction and retain the same jobs and housing they were assigned, or they can seek new employment opportunities elsewhere. More details about the factions and the jobs they offer can be found further in the FAQ. 「 What is the town layout? 」 Yoshiwara is walled town and fairly small, seeming a bit more like a neighborhood within the greater Tokyo area than any sort of independent city. At its widest point, it can be crossed on foot in about an hour and a half. Yoshiwara is more-or-less rectangular in shape. The longest walls of the town run in a south-west to north-east direction. There isn't a wall along the south-eastern border of the town, but the Sumida River serves as a reliable barrier. There are two major thoroughfares running parallel to the walls. These roads cut through the city and intersect in the dead center at a 90 degree angle. They serve as loose boundaries for the four districts (north, east, south, and west) and their respective factions. 「 What does the town look like? 」 Like you'd expect any area in Tokyo during the 1980s to look like... mostly. This is the red light district and the town makes that hard to forget. Along the main thoroughfares there are brothels, soaplands, burlesques, and fetish shops sitting shoulder to shoulder with more mundane businesses such as bars, restaurants, convenience stores, and cafes. The tallest building in the city (a nondescript office building in the south district) is only eight stories tall. Most of the other buildings in town are four floors or less. Despite being a pleasure district, there are plenty of houses and apartments occupying the back roads of Yoshiwara, though many of them are already a couple decades or, in a few cases, pushing a century old. The city's overall architecture skews towards traditional (or rather, a bit outdated) and all of the newest buildings are near the city center and along the riverbank. Neon signs hang over cobblestone roads and arcades rub shoulders with old-timey pharmacies. Despite being a bit run down the town fairly clean, especially for a red-light district. Not even the seediest back alleys are completely neglected. 「 How many people are there? 」 Between all the workers, visitors, off-world arrivals, and other transients it's hard to say how many people are actually living in Yoshiwara. There may be as little as 75,000 or as many as 150,000 people at any given moment depending on the time of day and any festivities that may be taking place. Overall it's a little cramped but perfectly livable, if a bit of a nuisance to navigate during peak hours. 「 What are the people like? 」 As workers, the people of Yoshiwara tend to be welcoming, hospitable, and friendly. The city runs off charm and these people are professionals. They'll keep you company all night long and happily bleed your wallet dry in the process. But as residents, well... It's generally understood that nobody visits Yoshiwara unless they want to and no one lives there unless they have to. Many of the sex workers are here because they have no other options, and some of them were flat out sold to their employers. Entertainers that operate in Yoshiwara tend to carry a stigma with them for the rest of their careers. The police are assumed to be simultaneously corrupt and too inept to be trusted in a real city. The people here are survivors, and while the residents will look after each other they won't hesitate to prey on newcomers and naive outsiders. 「 What's the technology like? 」 The technology level more-or-less correlates to the late Showa period (i.e.: the late 70s and early 80s), though the influx of other-worldly visitors means there's a scattering of anachronistic technology found here and there. There are vehicles in the greater Tokyo area, though nothing larger than a scooter is permitted in Yoshiwara. Electricity, radio, television, and landline phones are all a bit dodgy but common place. No one has quite managed practical cellphones yet (you can get the briefcase style ones if you really want and have nearly a million yen to spare) and there's only a very rudimentary internet. 「 What about magic? 」 Low level magic is a common and accepted part of life in Yoshiawa. One can find minor practitioners like fortune tellers, exorcists, ghost hunters, and so on with relative ease. They might not all be legit but some of them are. More powerful magic does exist but it's hush-hush and often denied. Those that show off, be they native or transplants, run the risk of getting mobbed by the locals, given a firm talking to by other supernatural folks, or even mysteriously vanishing. PCs and NPCs alike can acquire power-limiting seals to put on troublemakers and won't hesitate to do so. 「 Are there spirits and gods? 」 There are! Or at least, there seem to be. Rumors about local spirits (that shop-keeper's dog is actually an inugami, an alligator in the river is Wani, Teke Teke is lurking in this particular alleyway) abound, but are hard to confirm or deny. 「 Is there a network? 」 There is! Sort of. As mentioned there is internet in Yoshiwara, but it's only suited to text-based sites with small images and even those can take an agonizingly long time to load. The town doesn't have its own website but there is a community forum for visitors and residents alike. Most of the activity there comes from advertisements and event planners but the boards for general talk are still lively. That being said, personal computers are rather expensive and it'll likely be some time before characters can afford their own. Fortunately, there's a handful of internet cafes you can make use of in the meantime, though lines can be long and you're limited to one hour of use at a time. 「 My character is from Japan. Will they recognize anything? 」 Not likely. Though they share a name, are both pleasure districts, and are both located within the greater Tokyo area, this Yoshiwara is quite different from its real-world equivalent. It's larger, not just a pleasure district, and its exact location is different. Tokyo and Japan itself are a bit closer to their real world equivalents, albeit still with the existence of magic and inconsistent technology levels. The rest of the world, however, is much different. The year is cited as 928 (not 928 AD or 928 Showa or anything like that - just 928), though the calendar is a normal 12 month sort. All the maps and globes will show earth with all the same landmasses, but many of the other countries will have outdated, anachronistic, or flat out new names - if they exist at all. Many of the nations' borders have been redrawn and some countries simply aren't there at all. Whatever world your character is from, it's clear that this one is very different. 「 Are the local characters aware of the off-world people? 」 They sure are. It's a phenomena found all over the world and handled in various ways. In Tokyo, the preferred method is shoving them all into Yoshiwara and not allowing them to leave until they've proved they can behave and contribute meaningfully to society. 「 What are the districts and factions? 」 There are four major factions and districts in Yoishiwara, named after and oriented around the four cardinal directions. More details can be found on the faction and locations pages. The basics are as follows. • North: The pleasure district, lead by Bishamon. Evenly balanced between commercial and residential buildings. Brothels, soaplands, host clubs, and strip clubs are the most common business. • East: The 'yakuza' district, lead by Jikoku. This district is primarily residential. However, a few high end yakuza-backed business such as hotels and restaurants can be found along the river. • South: The financial district, lead by Zouchou. Mostly business, but some residential. The largest casino in Yoshiwara is in the south district, right on the riverbank. Smaller gambling dens can be found throughout, as well as Yoshiwara's only bank. • West: The entertainment district, lead by Koumoku. Even mix of business and residential. Houses the towns only true concert hall, playhouse, and movie theater. Numerous smaller entertainment venues can be found throughout. Yoshiwara's fire and police stations are located here, along with the library. 「 Which faction has the most power? 」 At the moment, none. The factions maintain friendly relations with one another and no one tries to seize too much power for fear of upsetting the other three. The tension between the three grows with every day, however, and newcomers from other worlds have the potential to upset the balance. 「 Is there ______ in Yoshiwara? 」 Probably! Generic locations and NPCs won't be listed out in exhaustive detail, so players are able to freely assume that nearly anything they need can be found - within limits, of course. There's only so much space within Yoshiwara so please be conservative in what you assume is present. For example, you can safely assume that there are a few ponds in Yoshiwara, but not a full-sized lake. An actual amusement park wouldn't make sense, but the occasional popup carnival would. You can say that there's a ramen stand run by a kitsune, but not one run by Inari. 「 What other locations are there? 」 There are all sorts of businesses and sights to see within Yoshiwara itself, so one isn't likely to grow bored! However, the rest of Tokyo is just beyond Yoshiwara's wall, if you can get there, and the Sumida River is a lovely place to go boating on for the afternoon. If you're interested in a more exciting venture you could always try poking around the abandoned subway system - or maybe you want to try to follow the rumors that tell you how to reach reikai, the spirit world... More information on locations both within Yoshiwara and beyond its walls can be found here. 「 GAMEPLAY INFORMATION 」 「 How did my character get here? 」 There are 'hot spots' of arrivals from other worlds all over the planet, but despite that no one actually knows the mechanics behind said arrivals. The theories abound - the gods brought them here, two universes briefly crossed over and left them behind, this world is their world's afterlife - but no concrete answers have ever been found. 「 How can my character go home? 」 They can't. People from other worlds have been arriving in a steady trickle for decades and not a single one has ever managed to return to their home world. Sometimes they go missing but they're still out there somewhere, be it living under a different identity, wandered off to another city, stuck in the spirit world, or simply dead. 「 Are non-human characters humanized? 」 Only characters that have completely inhuman forms (such as GLaDOS from Portal) or are otherwise incompatible with a human-sized city (like the Autobots from Transformers) will need to be humanized. All non-human humanoids will be allowed to retain their canon appearance, including visibly inhuman characters such as orcs or werewolves. Please contact the mods if you're unsure if your character requires humanization. 「 How often will there be events? 」 Every month will have a major event and a mini event. The major event will progress the metaplot and have a separate OOC planning post go up a few days ahead of time. The mini event will not have separate OOC plotting posts and will mostly focused on smut, slice or life, or winding down from the previous events. Intro logs and test drive memes will take the place of mini events when they occur. 「 Are there NPCs? 」 While there are NPCs present for characters to interact with they generally won't be available for actual threads, nor will the mods be actively playing them in any capacity. NPCs exist to facilitate player plots and exploration, and conversations between characters and NPCs will typically be planned out via plotting comments or PMs. 「 How do I get involved with the plot? 」 That's up to you! Characters can explore the setting, start a business, get involved with your faction, connect with NPCs, work their way into the government, form contracts with supernatural beings, and more. Each monthly event will have some way for your character to get involved, and plot hooks may be offered as event rewards. 「 How are faction placements chosen? 」 During the application process you'll be ask to list your factions in order of preference. The mod team will do their best to place each character in their first or second choice, but some characters may be placed in their third or even fourth choice to prevent one faction from becoming too populous. 「 Do I have to stay with my starting faction? 」 Not at all. Once the indebted period ends your character can side with a different faction or swear them off altogether. However, once someone is known to be allied with a faction it's harder to get another to trust you. Characters that quit their starting faction on good or neutral terms will maintain a favorable reputation with their starting faction until they join another. 「 What prevents my character from leaving their starting faction early? 」 If the free room and board and aren't enough motivation to stick around every faction has enforcers whose sole job is to keep newcomers in line. Furthermore, the factions' role in keeping off-world visitors contained is why the Tokyo government mostly leaves Yoshiwara alone. Indebted deserters will be swiftly returned to their faction by both other faction members and the city police, and even non-indebted individuals will be treated poorly outside Yoshiwara's walls. 「 What jobs can new characters get within a faction? 」 Each faction has its own unique needs, and there are several skilled positions (such as first aid specialists) that are needed in every faction. Details on each can be found on the factions page. 「 My character isn't suited to any of the jobs their faction offers. Now what? 」 Not to worry! There are some types of skilled and unskilled labor - such as janitors, waiters, bartenders, prep cooks, and first aid specialists - that are needed in every faction. Granted, most of these jobs require minimal or low levels of skill which means the pay ranges from 'the bare minimum needed to survive' (for janitors and housekeepers) to 'enough that you might only need one roommate instead of three' (for bartenders and firstaid specialists). In short: no character will starve so long as they're willing to work, but if they end up in a faction poorly suited to their talents they might have to take an unpleasant job to survive. 「 What about factionless characters? 」 There are a large number of jobs that neither require nor bestow a faction allegiance. Some of them even pay better than the faction jobs. However, unaffiliated businesses rarely offer room and board and new hires are often forced to find roommates or rent single rooms. 「 What are the benefits and drawbacks to remaining part of a faction after the indebted period ends? 」 Faction members have easier access to information, resources, housing, and employment opportunities. NPCs will be slow to deliberately target a known faction member for fear of retaliation. The more prominently someone allies themselves with a faction the more benefits they reap. However, loyalty is expected of all faction members and that expectation only grows the deeper one's involvement gets. The higher one's rank within a faction the harder it is to leave or gain favor with another. Characters with important secrets may be forced to go into hiding or outright ally with another faction if they wish to disassociate with their current one unharmed. For unaffiliated character, the playing field is level. They don't get the benefit of easy jobs, free housing, or built-in allies. On the other hand it's easier for them to have the trust of multiple factions at once and less risky to break allegiances. Unaffiliated characters are also the only ones able to get jobs at the police and fire departments without proving themselves trustworthy first. 「 How do I get involved with the supernatural side of the plot? 」 Due to the semi-secretive nature of the supernatural community there isn't an automatic 'in' with them the same way there is for the factions. There will, however, be multiple avenues to involve ones self via event prompts, research opportunities, and NPC quests. 「 What if my character is reluctant to have sex? 」 There's plenty of things to encourage them. If the saturation of sex-centric businesses and overall sex-friendly attitude of Yoshiwara doesn't do the trick, there will be numerous opportunities for your character to be dosed with aphro to help encourage them. If you believe that your character would be too reluctant even with the use of aphro, or too upset and miserable after the fact, we strongly encourage you to consider another character for the game. 「 What are the effects of aphro? How will my character take it? 」 All forms of aphro will cause sexual arousal but the effects can vary greatly depending on the type used. Some will only cause arousal, while others may also cause increased desire, increased sensitivity, euphoria, delirium, various emotional effects, and more. The exact effects of any aphro used in events will be clearly listed in event write-ups. The most common form of aphro is a clear, flavorless liquid. It can be purchased at nearly any pharmacy and is easily mixed with food or drink; during events in particular there are rarely warning labels on laced products. Aphro-laced incense is the second more common form. There are also forms that can be smoked (usually mixed with tobacco or opium) or taken in pill format but both of these methods are rare and especially potent. Other forms of aphro (including supernatural forms) may also be used. ICly, there are numerous opportunities for characters to take aphro with or without realizing it. OOCly, it should never be used in a thread without clear warning being posted. 「 What items will my character arrive with? 」 Their clothes and whatever else they would reasonably have on them, such as a backpack and it's contents or a suit of armor that they're wearing. Characters with 'hammerspace' storage methods (e.g: bags of holding, a Sylladex from Homestuck) will be limited to arriving with 10 items. Each individual item must be able to fit inside a 2-foot cube. Their storage methods will otherwise work as intended. 「 Is there any power nerfing? 」 For the most part, no, but there are several exceptions. Powers that allow your character to travel between worlds or different planes of existence don't function, which is the only sort of permanent depowering in the game. Extreme powers, such as those that would allow characters to instantly annihilate or otherwise seriously harm the town, seem to be functioning just fine, but attempts to make use of them to destroy the city will cause the character to immediately loose consciousness. Any skills that can instantly cause death are disabled upon arrival, but characters may be able to regain them at a later date; this nerf only applies to skills where instant death is the sole impact of the power. 「 What if my character has a connection to a god or other supernatural creature? 」 If your character is related to, indebted to, descended from, or actually is a specific god or supernatural creature it may have an impact on how the setting and certain NPCs interact with them. There is a section on the application for this, so please be sure to fill it out. 「 What's to stop my character from destroying the town piece by piece? 」 You character won't be the first to try to cause trouble in the city, nor will they be the last, and people here have developed plenty of countermeasures for handling these sorts of disruptions. There are some powerful NPCs lurking around, after all, and both PCs and NPCs can acquire power-limiting seals to place on individuals that show off too much magical power at once. That said, destruction isn't strictly off-limits. You may assume that your character can destroy or vandalize store fronts, food carts, street signs and lights, and other minor structures; burglarize homes and businesses; and mug, murder, fight, and otherwise cause trouble for unnamed NPCs. However, you are expected to enforce fair consequences on your character and failure to do so will result in mod intervention. For example, you can say your character will get away with robbing a couple NPCs at night with no witnesses, but you should assume that people will be more cautious and that a description of your character will circulate if they continue. If you would like your character to go on a crime spree or destroy any structures larger than those listed above, please contact the mods. 「 How are drops, hiatuses, and canon-updates handled? 」 All three methods involve reikai (or the spirit realm), albeit in different ways. The details are as follows. • Dropped characters vanish into the spirit realm. They can periodically be seen by other visitors to the spirit realm, but always disappear into the crowd or around a corner before anyone manages to reach them. • Hiatusing characters and those going through a canon update operate similarly. However, they eventually emerge from the spirit realm with their memories intact but their recollection of their time in reikai extremely vague and fuzzy. While it is known that people will sometimes disappear and reappear slightly different, no one knows for sure where they end up and what happens while they're there. 「 Can I app a dropped character? 」 You may! Previously dropped characters will wander out of the spirit realm with no memory of Yoshiwara whatsoever, as if they've just arrived. Players reapplying for a character they previously dropped may keep as few or as many of their character's memories as they wish. This only applies to character that you previously played. You may not retain memories of another player's version of the same character. Much like hiatus and drop mechanics, while it is known that people will sometimes disappear and reappear slightly different, no one knows for sure where they end up and what happens while they're there. 「 Is death permanent? 」 There is one method of resurrection that will allow each character to come back from death once. This method is automatic, though no details of the process are known ICly. This method of resurrection will involve... • The addition of new, setting specific powers. • The permanent loss of all canon powers. • The gradual loss of canon memories, at a rate of 1 year of memories lost for every 2 months in game. • Owing a favor to a certain entity. However, the exact OOC details will not be revealed until an in-game death occurs. Furthermore, alternative methods may be discovered by players or rewarded for event participation. Please contact the mods if you wish to kill your character. 「 What if my character can't speak Japanese? 」 Not to worry, they can now! Everyone who arrives in Yoshiwara will be able to speak and read Japanese on a high school level. No one knows why this happens and research will reveal that this language phenomena isn't unheard of, but also isn't common to other hot spots around the world. 「 What IC information is my character allowed to learn? 」 In general, all information listed on the FAQ, locations, NPCs, and business pages can be learned by any character with a bit of legwork and research. However, any information that is either noted to not be ICly known or related to the spirit world (aside from its existence) cannot be learned 'automatically'. You must either receive the reward via event or quest participation, or by having your character learn from another character that already has the relevant information. |
